Navigating SoCal freeways and streets requires a good bit planning even during off peak drive times. It's approximately 140 miles from downtown Los Angeles to downtown San Diego with The OC in the middle. You travel straight down, or up depending where you're starting, the 5 freeway, or along the 405 to access SoCal's famous and beautiful beach communities along the way. During off-peak hours, 10am - 2pm you can expect to make it in about in 2 to 2/12 hours. Don't even try it during peak drives times. SoCal Maps are the most popular maps available, however for a more detailed street map, we suggest do a MapQuest search or something comparable.
